Hosting dinner parties is one of my favorite things to do in the world; regardless of where I am in the world, I enjoy asking people to share a meal with me. Cooking for friends, family (and even strangers!) offers me great joy.
But, I did almost everything wrong the first time I hosted a dinner party. I’d picked a fussy, difficult dish I’d never made before in my haste to impress.
On the day of the supper, I rushed to numerous grocery stores to gather everything I needed, then sweated for several hours in the kitchen, attempting to make the jumble of items on my counter resemble the picture in the recipe. I was fatigued by the time I finished cooking, straightened up, and changed, and the first guest hadn’t even entered my home.
Here’s how to prevent a similar blunder and get to the point where hosting feels natural, stress-free, and even enjoyable.
Way to Host Dinner Party
With a rough strategy in place, accommodating more than a few guests is always easier. To begin arranging any event, start with a few fundamental details: the date, the number of visitors, the location, the budget, whether or not there will be music or entertainment, and the sort of party.
If you’re having trouble with the last one, a theme can help. It could be anything from tropical to winter wonderland to wine and cheese, or it could be themed around a current event like the Oscars or a holiday — really, whatever people enjoy.
A party theme not only aids in creating a memorable experience for your guests, but it also aids you in the planning process by providing a framework for your food, beverage, decor, and music selections.
Keep an Open Mind and Be Adaptable
If the night doesn’t go as planned, do your best to keep things in perspective. Is it possible to burn a dessert to the point of inedibility? Throw it out, get some ice cream from the freezer, and get on with your night. Be flexible and order a pizza if your roasted chicken is dry and your vegetables are bitter and charred. Neither option will ruin the evening.
The most basic points to include when throwing a dinner party are not just the ingredients you use in your dishes, but also the ambiance you create and the wine you serve with each course.
I couldn’t be happier because our evening was full with delicious food, laughter, and even new connections.
What are your plans for your upcoming dinner party? Is it possible for me to attend?
