There are no set guidelines for how many friends to invite to Baby’s first birthday party because the event is really for the grown-ups to celebrate this very special person! One-year-olds don’t care if there’s a big party or a cupcake after dinner, so prioritize staying within your child’s comfort zone.
Consider Baby’s tolerance for crowds and chaos, and invite accordingly. And definitely save the extravaganza party ideas for a future celebration when pony rides or organized games will be enjoyed and remembered. A one-year-birthday should last between an hour and an hour and a half.
Photo Memories and A lot of Balloons
The guest of honor will enjoy aspects of this special occasion, but photos will be Baby’s memories of this birthday.
A professional photographer is not required for a first birthday, but having a designated photographer is a good idea. You’re bound to be busy when you need a photo, so ask a friend or relative who’s good with a camera to be on the lookout for those iconic moments.
You have a theme if your child has expressed a strong preference for a toy, character, or color. However, it is acceptable if your strategy is to select a color that is easily found in the party section. At this point in the game, one or two key decorations plus balloons will suffice.
Latex balloons can pose a choking hazard when they pop, so Mylar is generally considered safer for this age. Even when using mylar, keep in mind the potential hazards posed by the attached ribbons.
