First Birthday Party Ideas
Is your child one year old? Of course you’ll celebrate! Continue reading for some ideas to help you plan a memorable First Birthday Party!
There are no set guidelines for how many friends to invite to Baby’s first birthday party because the event is really for the grown-ups to celebrate this very special person! One-year-olds don’t care if there’s a big party or a cupcake after dinner, so prioritize staying within your child’s comfort zone.
Consider Baby’s tolerance for crowds and chaos, and invite accordingly. And definitely save the extravaganza party ideas for a future celebration when pony rides or organized games will be enjoyed and remembered. A one-year-birthday should last between an hour and an hour and a half.
Photo Memories and A lot of Balloons
The guest of honor will enjoy aspects of this special occasion, but photos will be Baby’s memories of this birthday.
A professional photographer is not required for a first birthday, but having a designated photographer is a good idea. You’re bound to be busy when you need a photo, so ask a friend or relative who’s good with a camera to be on the lookout for those iconic moments.
You have a theme if your child has expressed a strong preference for a toy, character, or color. However, it is acceptable if your strategy is to select a color that is easily found in the party section. At this point in the game, one or two key decorations plus balloons will suffice.
Latex balloons can pose a choking hazard when they pop, so Mylar is generally considered safer for this age. Even when using mylar, keep in mind the potential hazards posed by the attached ribbons.
Birthday Cakes Ideas
The Cake Event is the highlight of a First Birthday! Is there going to be a smash cake? Is that a cupcake? A cake substitute? One-year-olds are more likely to grab a burning candle than to blow it out, so think about how you’ll handle the singing-wishing-blowing-out moment ahead of time.
Make a defined space for Baby’s reaction to Birthday Cake #1, as well as a good angle for the photographer. The floor will be protected by an inexpensive vinyl tablecloth. Consider the backdrop, but in simple terms. You can keep the focus on Baby’s Big Moment by adding a few balloons or streamers and a birthday sign to a blank wall space.
If your child will be in a high chair, attach a bit of crepe paper, party garland, or a small sign to the front of the chair where the camera will see it – and Baby can’t reach! Get into your photographer stance, and do a final check of decoration placement. You might avert an orange balloon halo in the scrapbook!
